WILLINGNESS TO USE BIKE LANES AND PERCEIVED BARRIERS TO URBAN CYCLING IN LA CONCORDIA, ECUADOR

Abstract
Sustainable mobility represents a strategic response to vehicular congestion and environmental deterioration affecting Latin American territories. Nevertheless, La Concordia canton, located in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Ecuador, lacks empirical studies on citizens' acceptance of cycling infrastructure. This study evaluates the willingness to use bike lanes and perceived barriers to urban cycling among canton residents. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational design was employed, with a sample of 120 participants selected through non-probabilistic convenience and snowball sampling. The instrument, a cycling infrastructure perception and willingness-to-use scale of 24 items across six dimensions (perceived safety, connectivity, comfort, environmental and health benefits, intention to use, and perceived barriers), demonstrated adequate internal consistency (a > 0.70 for all dimensions). The Shapiro-Wilk test revealed non-normal distributions in all variables (p < 0.05), leading to the use of Spearman correlation coefficients and non-parametric multiple regression. Results indicate that environmental and health benefits (p = 0.162; p = 0.018) are the sole statistically significant predictor of perceived barriers, while intention to use showed a marginal relationship (p = 0.065). A significant gender difference in intention to use was also detected (p = 0.041). The findings provide local evidence to inform decision-making in sustainable road infrastructure planning for the INIAP-Access corridor and other areas of the canton.
