INCOME INEQUALITY AND POVERTY IN ECUADOR IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT

Abstract
The article examines persistent income inequality and poverty in Ecuador, contextualizing them within the influence of international organizations. The country has experienced volatile economic growth, affected by external and internal factors, maintaining high levels of poverty and inequality, especially in rural areas and vulnerable groups. Globalization and the policies of the IMF, World Bank, and WTO have decisively influenced this, although their structural adjustment programs, such as the elimination of subsidies in 2019, have generated controversies and massive protests. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach with a retrospective longitudinal design (2000-2024), analyzing data from INEC, BCE, and ECLAC, as well as scientific literature. Variables include the Gini coefficient, poverty incidence (urban/rural), and international loan conditions. Results show a reduction in poverty between 2010-2017 due to social policies, but an increase in 2020 due to the pandemic. Income inequality, reflected in a Gini coefficient of 0.463, persists, with rural areas surpassing urban areas for the first time in 2023-2024. The article concludes that international policies have had mixed effects, often exacerbating inequalities due to their lack of adaptation to the local context.
