Abstract

Community-based tourism is recognized as an effective strategy for promoting sustainable development in rural communities with unique cultural and natural resources. This article aims to analyze the characteristics that community-based tourism management should have as a driver of development in the community of Pile, Montecristi, Manabí. To this end, a bibliographic research study was conducted, with a qualitative approach and exploratory design, based on a systematic review of academic sources and documented case studies in Ecuador. A comparative analysis of the experiences of Agua Blanca, Salango, and Barcelona identified that successful initiatives have community organizations, training programs, and strategies for diversifying tourism products. It was found that the articulation of public-private partnerships and digital promotion contribute to increasing the economic and social sustainability of the ventures. Among the most relevant results, it is noteworthy that more than 70% of the members of the communities studied perceive improvements in their quality of life and in the conservation of their heritage. The main conclusion is that community-based tourism management, when implemented in a participatory and comprehensive manner, is an effective way to boost the local economy, strengthen cultural identity and promote sustainable development. This study identifies the need for future research to further analyze environmental sustainability and the participation of local actors in organizational processes.
