Sustainable law and local environmental development represent complementary approaches to address the global challenges of climate change, environmental degradation and social justice. This paper analyses how legal frameworks and regulatory tools promote balanced development that integrates environmental sustainability with economic and social progress at the community level. Through the study of principles such as the human right to a healthy environment, environmental justice and the rights of nature, the role of law in protecting ecosystems and strengthening local capacities is highlighted. The article identifies that legal instruments, such as land use planning, natural resource management laws and sustainable development plans, are fundamental to ensuring that human activities are compatible with environmental preservation. Furthermore, it highlights that citizen participation and inclusive governance are essential pillars for the effective implementation of these regulations. Through prior consultations, public hearings and participatory budgets, communities can influence decisions that affect their environment, fostering co-responsibility in environmental management. However, significant challenges are evident in the application of these laws, including lack of resources, institutional weakness and inequalities in access to environmental justice. In light of this, the article concludes that strengthening local capacities, promoting transparency and environmental education are key aspects to move towards more sustainable local development.
