COGNITIVE STRATEGIES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL THINKING IN BASIC GENERAL EDUCATION STUDENTS

The objective of this study was to analyze the use of cognitive strategies and their effect on the development of critical thinking in Basic General Education students of the C03 circuit of the Portoviejo canton. The research was carried out under a mixed, descriptive approach and the technique of surveying teachers, self-assessment tests for students and interviewing experts was used. The results reveal difficulties in students in detecting the centrality of a topic, in addition identifies that they have never reviewed their own beliefs and those of others to come to a conclusion; The findings show that the exercises where students write concepts or texts in their own words are the cognitive strategy most used for the development of critical thinking. It is also highlighted that the reduced logical thinking and the absence of reading habits in the students are the central problems so that they do not adequately develop critical thinking. It is concluded that the strategies applied by teachers for the development of critical thinking in students have not given significant results and that there are deficiencies in promoting skills such as logical reasoning, posing problems, identifying main ideas among other insufficiencies.
