NON-NATURAL GREEN SPACES: ENVIRONMENTAL IMPORTANCE AND INFLUENCE ON THE WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE

Green spaces have a high importance on the well-being of people. The objective of the study was to determine if the "Eloy Alfaro" Laica University of Manabí has the amount of green spaces suggested by the WHO (9-15 m2/in), in addition, to environmentally assess the trees of the institution and determine if these provide some physical and mental benefit on its users. To estimate the area occupied by green spaces, Drone images of the university campus were obtained, which were then processed using a GIS. Each identified green space was environmentally valued. The physical and mental benefits provided by these sites were determined through an interview. It is estimated that the university has approximately 34,000 m2 of unnatural green spaces, which represents 1.75 m2/inhab., Which means that the WHO suggestions are not met. The green spaces evaluated reached a medium environmental assessment (63.81%). Most users of green spaces attribute physical and mental benefits to sites with more trees and wide coverage. It is advisable to generate more green spaces, considering the characteristics of the selected species, but, above all, that these spaces are properly managed.
