Abstract

Stomach cancer is one of the main causes of death in the world, it is a progressive disease that is mostly detected in the terminal stage and affects more frequently the first world and developing countries. Survival in stomach cancer patients during the period 2010 - 2015 was analyzed using the Cox Regression model at the SOLCA Manabí Oncology specialty hospital, Ecuador. The study was observational, descriptive and retrospective to evaluate the survival of patients diagnosed with stomach cancer between the years 2010 - 2015. The global and disease-free survival at five years was established from the time elapsed from the diagnosis to the occurrence of the event or date of last contact. Of the 344 patients studied, 63.2% were men and 36.8% women, the age limits were between 17 and 93 years. The tumor stage was considered, where (I) represents 8.4%, (II) 7.8%, stage (III) 15.6% and finally with 68.3% stage (IV), showing that patients in advanced stages were less likely to survive. With the Cox regression model, it was possible to demonstrate a statistically significant association between tumor stage and survival. Prevention programs are essential to prevent cancer from being diagnosed in advanced stages.
