Abstract
Across the globe, dentistry is considered a high-risk profession. Studies show that dentists face
more serious health problems than other medical professionals. Dental professionals are
constantly exposed to various types of hazards, including lighting that can cause vision problems.
Objective: To identify visual disturbances due to exposure to different light sources in the dental
environment. Methodology: A qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective literature
review based on the PRISMA methodology for the compilation of the scientific articles used, which
were searched by means of advanced search strings in the online databases PUBMED, Wiley,
LILACS, SCIELO and SCIENCE DIRECT, and inclusion and exclusion criteria were established
to reduce the risk of information bias. Results: It was determined that in the dental environment
the personnel are exposed to violet and blue light, the former having a spectrum range of 380 to
4

50 nm, which can reach the retina affecting the eye. While blue light has a spectrum range of
50 to 459 nm, making blue photons have more energy than UV, so it is considered more
dangerous for vision. Conclusions: It was concluded that visual disturbances caused by exposure
to different light sources in the dental environment, identifying that in the dental office is made
use of photopolymerization units, LED lights, argon lasers, diode lasers and plasma arc lamps
that emit blue light which is a serious problem, since being exposed to a lot of blue light for long
periods of time can have a negative effect on our health, mainly on vision causing painful
inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, it can also cause damage to the crystalline lens and
especially the retina, as well as fatigue, eye pain, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma and keratitis.
Therefore, the study of blue light is fundamental to take care of the vision of dental personnel.
